How should I prepare for winter riding?

Cyclists of all ages and abilities ride on WBTWD. Last year, over 1,200 cyclists registered their participation. This year's goal is to reach 1,400 cyclists.

The GO Boulder website offers information to assist with your commute, including bike and transit maps and GOBikeBoulder.net, a mapping tool that creates a customized bike route with turn-by-turn directions and calculates how far you will ride, how many calories you will burn, and how much gas you will save by not driving.

For those who want to learn to ride safely and comfortably, check out the Community Cycles Winter Riding Workshop on January 14, 9 – 11 a.m. To register and for more information visit www.communitycycles.org. Check out the additional wintertime commuter tips from Bicycle Colorado.

When are the bikeways plowed?

Even if you wake up to find snow falling, it is a perfect day to commute by bike. That is because the City of Boulder plows over 60 miles of paved multi-use paths during winter storm events. The city begins plowing multi-use pathways as soon as an inch of snow accumulates and at exactly the same time that crews are plowing the streets! In fact many cyclists report that biking is faster than driving, especially in slow winter traffic!

Bear_Creek_Underpass_in_winter_Alfred_Sawatzky_

The Boulder Creek and Broadway paths are plowed first, followed by the Foothills Parkway path and other Greenway paths. The Boulder Creek Path is cleared by the Parks Department, while the Broadway path, from Baseline Road to University Avenue, is cleared by CU-Boulder facilities maintenance. All other multi-use paths are maintained by City of Boulder Street and Bikeway Transportation Maintenance (or the adjacent property owner). On-street bike lanes are cleared during street snow removal operations.

Can I get a WBTWD event T-shirt or water bottle?

Absolutely. We've designed some cool stuff for you to enjoy and share with others. A WBTWD shirt, mug, water bottle or sticker makes a great prize or incentive for you and your co-workers, visit Cafe Press to order now!

Funding for EAB & Bike Ambassadors

Funding for EAB & Bike Ambassadors

Community Cycles, will receive two grants totaling $120,000 from the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) and Boulder County.

The grants, which begin in 2012, will expand Community Cycles’ programs, including its Earn-a-Bike, jail work release, workplace training and children’s safety programs.

DRCOG awarded Community Cycles $50,000 over a two-year period as part of a Federal Highways’ Congestion Mitigation Air Quality initiative. Community Cycles will apply the funding to conduct bike-training workshops at local businesses to encourage bike commuting. The program will begin in March, and businesses in Boulder County and along the U.S. 36 corridor are eligible to participate.

Boulder County awarded Community Cycles $70,000 to expand the Earn-a-Bike program, which involves participants attending several classes to learn basic mechanical skills, safety and etiquette before “earning” a bike at no cost. The Boulder County grant is part of a larger Federal Transit Adminstration grant.

The Earn-a-Bike program has reduced car trips and supported low-income county residents with transportation needs. As part of the program, more than 1,500 bikes are recycled into the community as well.

Sep 19, 2011, 7p.m. - Dinner and Bikes

Bike Films and books, vegan foodThe Dinner & Bikes Tour is traveling the western states this September to tell stories and show movies bicycle culture while serving up tasty gourmet vegan food.

Elly Blue brings you tales of the bicycle economy, accompanied by photographic evidence. She publishes a blog and a zine, both called Taking the Lane, and writes regularly about bicycling issues for venerable online news outlet Grist.org.

Joe Biel will show a selection of very short films about bicycle culture and activism, including excerpts from Aftermass, his forthcoming documentary about bicycle activism in Portland, Oregon over the last twenty years. Joe has been part of Microcosm Publishing since he started it in his closet 15 years ago.

Joshua Ploeg is atraveling vegan chef, who improvises climactic culinary masterpieces on two hours’ notice for you and your date and perhaps also your entire circus troupe, using ingredients from the nearest store in your fully equipped kitchen or just the rice cooker and blender someone left behind in the corner of your squat if that’s how you roll. In adverse circumstances, his food only gets fancier. His book In Search of the Lost Taste is a Microcosm smash hit. He has several cookzines, including the popular Fire and Ice and the brand new So Raw It’s Downright Filthy.

Two Wheels good, Four wheels needed

Community Cycles needs a vanWell, usually we don’t put it that way, and it most cases, two wheels can do the job of four- only with less pollution and more fun, but sometimes there is no way to get around a need for four wheels.

Every year about 1500 bikes go through Community Cycles. All these bikes do not fit in our shop, so we have cobbled together free and paid storage spaces. This all requires moving a lot of bikes. Our old van has died and we are DESPERATELY in need of a dedicated shop van.

We are looking for people who may have a van to donate, may have contacts where we can get a low-cost van (dealer that donates?), or can help us find a van for the shop to own. We will work with any business who donates a van to do whatever we can to give you tons of exposure for your generous contribution. Full tax deduction for businesses or individuals.

If you can help, please contact Evan at evan@communitycycles.org

July 14, 2011 - Celebrate the Opening the LOBO (Longmont - Boulder) Trail
July 14, 2011 - Join the Golden Spoke Ride to Celebrate the Opening of the LOBO (Longmont - Boulder) Trail

The trail is crusher-fine surface (fine for anything but real skinny tires). The northern segment is complete. Portions of the Boulder-Niwot segment are complete. Bike Longmont will be leaving from Longmont and Community Cycles will leave from Boulder.

The Boulder group will meet and ride from the following locations:

- 2:45 pm, Meet at Sister Cities Plaza in front of the Municipal Bldg on Broadway & Canyon.

- 3:00 pm, Stop at Community Cycles (people should meet at CC at 3 pm) along the Goose Creek trail (2805 Wilderness Place, in back of Boulder beer).

Both groups will ride to the Left Hand Grange Valley Park in Niwot where we will connect with the Longmont riders by a handshake, a toast of fruit punch and a Golden Spoke Ceremony to mark the LOBO Trail's connection.

This continues a tradition begun in the Nineteenth Century when the first Transcontinental Railway line was completed. The construction crew and officials coming from the East and those coming from the West would celebrate the connection with a handshake, a toast of champagne and drive a Golden Spike to complete the connection.

Bike Collection Drive July 29, 30, 31 & August 1, 2
Our popularity and programs continue to grow, so after for years of existence, we're setting out to do our first full force bike collection drive July 29, 30, 31 & August 1, 2.

Bikes make our programs work and we need your help collecting a lot of them.

Our donation policy is quite simple, we'll take anything bike related in any condition. We're a non-profit so we provide receipts for tax-exemption.

Bikes can be donated over the four day drive at 2 locations:

Main Shop will be accepting donations:
Thursday July 29, 1-9p.m.
Friday July 30, 1-9p.m.
Saturday July 31, 11a.m.-6p.m.
Sunday August 1, 11a.m.-6p.m.

North Storage will be accepting donations:
Saturday July 31, Noon-4p.m.
Sunday August 1, Noon-4p.m.
Monday August 2, 4-8p.m.

Since sometimes, it's easier to donate bikes closer to home, we're looking for folks to organize mini-collection drives out in their own community. You and/or your HOA, neighborhood association, workplace or place of worship can host a mini-collection. If you would like to organize a mini-bike collection, please contact us

Jan 21, 2009 - Boulder Winter Bike to Work Day

You wake up and look out the window. After a full night of snowfall, the snow looks knee deep. Still, it's a perfect day to bike to work. That's because Boulder focuses on keeping bike paths safe and useable, even during our worst snowstorms. Our city has a great snow-removal system. The city of Boulder Streets and Bikeways Maintenance group maintains Boulder's 200+ miles of off-road multi-use pathways to high-level transportation standards. This means that clearing multi-use paths for non-motorized travel is a priority. The city has separate crews plowing the city's multi-use paths at exactly the same time other crews are plowing the streets.

To encourage local commuters to give winter riding a try and celebrate those who cycle all year long, GO Boulder is hosting the first ever Winter Bike to Work Day on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 7 am - 9 am, breakfast at the following locations:

  • Municipal Building (hosted by GO Boulder)
  • Moe's on Arapahoe (host by Boulder East/Moe's).
  • 18th & Colorado (host by CU Boulder)

Register on-line to win great prizes like messenger bags, studded snow tires, bike lights, bike pumps and more.
